As long as they save users from the anxiety of imagining their digital life might go up in smoke, we’re cool. Here’s hoping MacUpdate updates MacUpdate Installer so that it doesn’t trip alarms in common malware scanners, or they get in touch with those malware scanner developers to see if they can prevent MacUpdate Installer from being called out as truly infected. If that changes, or if it becomes clear they’re spot testing, delivering the original disk image in some cases and the MacUpdate Installer disk image in others, we’ll likely have to break up with MacUpdate. But, as long as our users are getting the original disk image from us when they click the Download button at MacUpdate, we’ll continue to release our updates there. We can’t get the Audiobook Builder update from MacUpdate to come down as the MacUpdate Installer disk image we saw last Tuesday. All reactions you want associated with your brand, right? Search for “MacUpdate” on that page and you’ll find it occurs 82 times, with some pretty clear indications this isn’t just our imagination – others aren’t really taking to MacUpdate Installer, either. Causing users any kind distress is not cool with us. With the range of experience levels out there, who knows? What matters right now, though, is if you read between the lines, MacUpdate isn’t planning to do anything about how some folks out there may experience that dreadful shiver I mentioned earlier when they perceive is a bona fide threat to their data, identity, and finances. Simply opening a disk image and copying the included application to the Applications folder may be harder than using MacUpdate Installer and sitting through an advertisement. So, the official word from MacUpdate is MacUpdate Installer is intended to be helpful. This e-mail was sent from the contact form on MacUpdate Support It looks like users of other applications have recently found the same, and that it may be related to how MacUpdate now wraps developer updates with the MacUpdate Installer and presents ads. We tested a download from your site this morning and found the same issue – MacUpdate Installer.app is infected with. We updated our application, Audiobook Builder, yesterday and had a user report ClamXAV says the disk image they downloaded is infected. So, last week, when one of our users reached out to us for some kind of explanation and immediate resolution, thank you very much, we reached out to MacUpdate, in turn. Right? Yeah, didn’t think so.Īnd, while means something to us, to the average person it still looks an awful lot like their Mac is about to get jacked. It’s not enough anymore that you trade seconds of your life viewing ads on MacUpdate itself, you’re craving an extra dose of selling your self while drumming your fingers waiting for that update to install. It comes with potentially unwanted software that advertises other products you might be interested in, like much of the rest of today’s free digital experience. PUA means Potentially Unwanted Application, and that’s the case with MacUpdate Installer. After all, news outlets have been telling you for 30 years on that infection means your data is at risk, your identity could be stolen, and your bank accounts are about to be drained. Malware scanners, like ClamXav and Avast, can report MacUpdate Installer is infected with something named similarly to .Īt first glance, this could send a shiver down your spine. This all might be easier for some (really?), but it comes with one very concerning caveat: When you download from MacUpdate now, you may receive a MacUpdate Installer disk image, which includes a single application, MacUpdate Installer, that you double-click to install the desired update. macOS Ventura: Mac sleep settings After the update to macOS Ventura, I started pondering how to set the time after which the Mac or MacBook.MacUpdate, a very helpful resource that’s led users to discover our applications and kept them up-to-date for the last 13 years, has a plan to make the entire update process easier for users. In this context, I usually also study the technical data. The appearance of The Lost – the remnants of humanity rising in the form of the undead, although at first, it seems to be just a new enemy unit that fills the role of the all-too-familiar “zombie” archetype, became an important link in XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. But unlike a typical venture deal with a corporate governance structure in place, investors don't get a board seat, voting control or shareholder protections, and they hold no equity. Those backers, who will put in up to $850 million in total, are getting in at a steep discount (40 to 60 percent) to what it will cost retail investors when the public sale begins in coming months. Telegram has already raised institutional capital in what's called a presale, luring big investors who are willing to commit at least $20 million. However, Andreessen Horowitz and Union Square Ventures, which made early bets in the crypto space, have taken a pass. Most investors who spoke to CNBC for this story said the offering is oversubscribed and could value TON at up to $5 billion.Īccording to a story last month in Recode, big-name venture firms including Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers are participating in the deal. Noyes wrote that Telegram's approach is "incompatible with blockchain technology," and said that as an investor, "I certainly would not put a single cent I care more than nil about losing into this."ĭespite such warnings, Telegram is having no problem raising money. In a recent blog post, Noyes, a quantitative trader, called the Telegram ICO an "opportunistic ploy" and described the project's 132-page technical whitepaper as "essentially a wishlist of things they want to have, and how it will work assuming that their wishlist doesn't crash and burn." Of Telegram, he says, "In my mind, they don't have the talent to do that."Ĭharles Noyes of Pantera Capital is similarly skeptical - and far less polite. It's more like science than entrepreneurship," said Nick Tomaino, the founder of a crypto fund called 1confirmation. "The teams that will win are teams with deep historical context who have been tinkering with consensus mechanisms and scalability for several years. For example, bitcoin has a consensus algorithm called "proof of work" that ensures a single version of the truth. His development team has a proven ability to build and scale large social platforms.īut creating a whole new blockchain, with all the encryption, security and infrastructure required, is an entirely different undertaking.īecause it's decentralized, a critical component to crypto development is something called a consensus mechanism, an automated way of maintaining order and establishing and enforcing rules within a blockchain. To date, Telegram has been funded by Pavel Durov, who four years ago sold his 12 percent stake in VKontakte for reportedly around $300 million. Telegram's development team is slated to receive 4 percent of the tokens with a four-year vesting period. Now, it's selling investors on the idea of a futuristic blockchain-based messaging system that, if all goes as planned, will be up and running by 2021 and create a "VISA/Mastercard alternative for the new decentralized economy," according to a primer published online. "Telegram users are really at the epicenter of the whole crypto boom," said Ryan Gilbert, a partner at Propel Venture Partners, which invests in financial technology. Many people in the crypto community have flocked to Telegram because of its libertarian roots and because it spurns advertising - the business model that drives Facebook, Twitter and Snap. It is "ready to relocate again if local regulations change," the site says. If your personal finances are simple, basic might be all you need, but you need to upgrade otherwise. It’s also somewhat restrictive: It limits you to six months of cash flow projections, 12 budget scenarios, and just two accounts. Tiller offers an optional email alert feature that serves up a daily digest of your transaction activity to your inbox. And you can always manually recategorize synced transactions if you’re not satisfied with your current spending categories. You’re always in control of your own categorization rules and color scheme, so your spreadsheets should always be easy to decipher, even if you don’t check them every day (or week). Tiller updates custom-created Google or Excel spreadsheets daily with auto-categorized transactions pulled from your synced accounts, theoretically enabling expense tracking for every dollar you earn. For example, a $50 grocery store purchase today appears as a “Groceries” or “Food” transaction (depending on your preference) tomorrow. No matter where you bank, borrow, and invest, your U.S.-based financial institution should sync with Tiller. Tiller Money merges the granularity of old-fashioned spreadsheet-based budgeting with the convenience of a cloud-based app that syncs with nearly 20,000 external financial sources: bank accounts, brokerage accounts, employer-sponsored retirement accounts, and credit products like credit cards and personal loans. At the same time, such experiments can give pathogens new abilities, such as making viruses more transmissible or more dangerous to humans. Gain of function experiments involve manipulating a pathogen to understand what contributes to its ability to cause disease. While the government did reverse the ban after strong international political pressure, the damage had been done. Mbeki’s decision was considered so damaging that scientists and physicians worldwide signed the Durban Declaration, reiterating that HIV indeed causes AIDS and urging Mbeki to reconsider his decision. This decision resulted in the deaths of over 330,000 people from HIV/AIDS between 20. But his erroneous claim still reached the then president of the Republic of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, who banned the use of lifesaving antiretrovirals in public hospitals. AIDS denialist Peter Duesberg was one person who disseminated this misinformation, which had been refuted by the scientific community at large. Likewise, some denied the role of the HIV virus in AIDS infection. Misinformation is just one common theme between the COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS pandemics. Instead, they promote the idea that pathogens don’t cause disease, but rather are a consequence of it. In general, these groups tend to also deny germ theory, claiming that infectious diseases are not caused by pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Others do not contest the existence of COVID-19, but ignore the severe consequences of infection. There are abundant claims on social media that the virus that causes COVID-19 has never been isolated, or it is insufficiently characterized. There are people who deny the existence of COVID-19. Denying the existence of a virus or a pandemic However, there are striking parallels between the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics that show the dire consequences disinformation can have on both patients and society as a whole. In the 40 years since the emergence of AIDS, society has learned how to cope with the disease with more effective diagnostics, treatments and preventive strategies, transforming AIDS from a lethal condition to a chronic disease. The COVID-19 infodemic became such a problem that the Royal Society and the British Academy released an October 2020 report noting its significant impact on vaccine deployment, endorsing legislation that prosecutes those who spread misinformation.Īs a researcher who studies HIV and lived through the AIDS pandemic, I felt a sense of déjà vu as COVID-19 disinformation spread. Infodemics can affect economies, politics, national security and public health. The problem of misinformation has been so widespread that it has its own word: “ infodemic,” a portmanteau of “information” and “epidemic.” Coined by journalist David Rothkopf during the 2003 SARS outbreak, it describes a situation where “a few facts, mixed with fear, speculation and rumor, are amplified and relayed swiftly worldwide by modern information technologies.” The COVID-19 infodemic began as soon as the first few cases of infections were confirmed. Similarly in Romania, disinformation is a contributing factor to the country’s disastrous fourth wave of COVID-19. In the U.S., for example, viewership of a Fox News program that downplayed the pandemic is associated with increased COVID-19 cases and deaths. Data shows that regions and countries where disinformation thrived experienced more lethal pandemic waves despite vaccine availability. What sets the COVID-19 pandemic apart, however, is the sheer magnitude of damaging disinformation put in circulation around the world. It fueled the 19th century smallpox anti-vaccine movements through some of the same arguments as those currently used against the COVID-19 vaccine. Misinformation altered how people trusted their governments and doctors during the 1918 influenza pandemic. Social media may have made the amount, variety and speed of misinformation seem unprecedented, but COVID-19 isn’t the first pandemic where false and harmful information has set back public health. Since health officials confirmed the first COVID-19 cases, misinformation has spread just as quickly as the virus. |
